A brief history on “Without Wax”

Without Wax is said to stem from the Latin words “sin” (without) and “ceras” (wax.) Some believe the English word “sincere” derives from this, although nothing has been confirmed that this is actually true. The story goes that back in the Greek and Roman renaissance era, when sculptures became prevalent, artists would go to quarries to purchase marble…unfortunately the quarries would sell cracked marble to them making it impossible for an artist to sculpt. At some point quarries started labeling the marble with “sin ceras” (aka without wax) to show that they had not doctored their marble with wax to fill the cracks. Therefore presenting a perfect piece with all its “impurities” visible. On the flip side, when artists would create their “master pieces” they would try to hide their flaws, chips and cracks with colored wax thus removing the purity and innocence of the piece in its original form.

Art is beautiful in all its flaws. As individuals what others may see as “cracks” make us who we are…beautiful and perfectly imperfect. People straddle this imaginary line we create in our minds…be who we think others may want us to be or…simply be who we feel we are. Most of us can’t put a definite finger on exactly “who we are”, we have strong thoughts about our idealistic image, feelings, beliefs…what we define ourselves as. It may not make sense to anyone other than us, however, that is what makes you you. Simply put…”without wax”. Don’t hide your flaws, be true to yourself, either in your confusion of what defines you or the solidity of who you are… people will either love you, hate you or be indifferent…just live.

Ashley and I have a lot to say about nothing in particular. This blog isn’t about one thing…it is about life…our lives…the world around us. The randomness of day to day and our desire to live a life devoid of mediocrity. We can assure you two things…it will have no consistency whatsoever…and it will be real…from our perspectives. You can, as with everything in life love it, hate it or be indifferent…just 2 girls take on life…without wax…
